Authorities are investigating after a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol was killed in the line of duty while trying to detain a fleeing felon Friday morning in St. Lucie County.

The crash involving a tractor-trailer happened around 3 a.m. along I-95 near Crosstown Parkway.

The trooper has been identified as 26-year-old Zachary Fink.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Fink was attempting to pull over the suspect, who was driving recklessly on I-95.

The suspect attempted a U-turn and began traveling the wrong way, and Fink followed.

At that point, Fink was struck by the driver of the tractor-trailer.

Both Fink and the truck driver lost their lives.

The suspect continued driving the wrong way on I-95, eventually crashed and fled the scene on foot.

A manhunt immediately ensued, and he was apprehended in a neighborhood after an extensive search around 8 a.m.

Fink, who leaves behind his fiancé' and parents, is the 53rd state trooper lost in the line of duty.

Interstate 95 northbound is still shut down from Becker Road to Crosstown Parkway, and southbound is closed from Okeechobee Road to Becker Road.
